Actually, that is possible when you are switching from one RDBMS database to another, we had that in our project. But it is very rare situation, and with a proper arch that is not very difficult.

But, I'm with you about direct SQL usage. That's much more optimized in terms of performance and enforce you to actually think about what are you doing. :)
